Radiation Pressure Supported Agn Tori with Hard X-ray and Stellar Heating

چکیده
The dynamics and structure of toroidal obscuration around AGN remain uncertain and controversial. In this paper we extend earlier work on the dynamical role of infrared radiation pressure by adding the effects of two kinds of distributed heating: Compton-heating due to hard X-rays from the nucleus and local starlight heating. We find numerical solutions to the axisymmetric hydrostatic equilibrium, energy balance, and photon diffusion equations including these effects. Within the regime of typical parameters, the two different sources of additional heating have very similar effects: the density profile within the torus becomes shallower both radially and vertically, but for plausible heating rates, there is only minor change (relative to the source-free case) in the distribution of column density with solid angle. The most interesting consequence of distributed heating is that it selects out a relatively narrow range of parameters permitting an equilibrium, particularly (L/LE)/τT . We discuss the implications of both the narrowness of the permitted range and its approximate coincidence with the range inferred from observations.

AGN dust tori: the X-ray-infrared connection
We have combined the well-studied CLASXS Chandra survey in Lockman with the Spitzer SWIRE survey data to study the X-ray-infrared connection for AGN. The sample consists of 401 X-ray-sources, of which 306 are detected by Spitzer, and a further 257 AGN candidates detected through their dust torus, but not by Chandra. We have used spectroscopic redshifts and classifications from the literature, w...
متن کاملWhere Is the Chromospheric Response to Conductive Energy Input from a Hot Pre-flare Coronal Loop?
Before the onset of a flare is observed in hard X-rays there is often a prolonged pre-flare or pre-heating phase with no detectable hard X-ray emission but pronounced soft X-ray emission suggesting that energy is being released and deposited into the corona and chromosphere already at this stage. This work analyses the temporal evolution of coronal source heating and the chromospheric response ...
متن کاملThe Nature of Luminous X-ray Sources with Mid-infrared Counterparts
We investigate the luminous X-ray sources in the Lockman Hole (LH) and the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) detected at 24μm using MIPS and also with IRAC on board Spitzer. We assemble optical/infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 45 X-ray/24μm sources in the EGS and LH. Only about 1/4 of the hard X-ray/24μm sources show pure type 1 AGN SEDs. More than half of the X-ray/24μm sources have ...
متن کاملThe Chemo-Dynami al Evolution of Ellipti al Galaxies: Pre-heating and AGN heating
We study the chemodynamical evolution of elliptical galaxies and their X-ray and optical properties using high-resolution cosmological simulations. Our Tree N-body/SPH code includes a self-consistent treatment of radiative cooling, star formation, supernovae feedback, and chemical enrichment. We present a series of ΛCDM cosmological simulations which trace the spatial and temporal evolution of ...
متن کاملMid - infrared Spitzer spectra of X - ray selected Type 2 QSOs : QSO 2 s are not ULIRGs
We have performed a spectroscopic study of 7 Type 2 QSOs using the mid-infrared spectrometer IRS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. These are (to our knowledge) the first mid-IR spectra of X-ray selected QSO2s taken. The objects have been selected according to their high intrinsic luminosities and column densities in the X-rays. Their spectra strongly differ from template spectra of Type 2 A...
